Bandaranayake College Gampaha

The story of the Bandaranayake College Western Band began in 1989 under the visionary guidance of then Principal Mr. P. P. D. T. Aquinas, whose dream was to nurture a generation of students with discipline, talent, and a love for music. From humble beginnings, the band quickly rose to prominence, becoming a symbol of pride for both the school and the Gampaha region Sri Lanka. Between 1990 and 2000, it earned the well-deserved reputation of being the best Western Band in the Gampaha District, capturing hearts with its precision, creativity, and dedication. Every beat of the drum and every note played reflected the passion of its young musicians and the tireless efforts of the teachers and principals who believed in their potential.

A new chapter unfolded in 2001 when the Western Band was officially recognized as a Western Cadet Band under the National Cadet Corps (NCC). This milestone marked the fusion of music and discipline — two powerful forces that have defined the band’s journey ever since. From that moment, the Bandaranayake College Western Cadet Band became more than a school ensemble; it became a symbol of excellence and unity, representing the spirit of the college on national stages. With every performance, the band carried forward a proud legacy — one built on determination, teamwork, and an unwavering commitment to greatness.

The band’s journey to national recognition began in 2002, when it took part in the All Island Western Cadet Band Camp at Rantambe for the very first time. Competing among the island’s most established schools, the Bandaranayake College Western Cadet Band proudly claimed Tenth place, proving that true talent knows no boundaries. What followed was nothing short of inspirational. In 2003, at their second attempt, the band achieved the unimaginable — winning the All Island Championship and repeating this victory three years in a row. The melodies that echoed through the Rantambe Camp during those years told a story of perseverance, discipline, and youthful energy. The crowd gathered in awe to witness the spirit of Bandaranayake College — vibrant, powerful, and unstoppable.

Over the years, this legacy has only grown stronger. The Bandaranayake College Western Cadet Band has now claimed the All Island Championship seven times in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2011, 2017, 2019, and 2022 and earned the runner-up position on four occasions in 2007, 2013, 2018, and 2023. In 2023, under the inspiring leadership of Sergeant Kavishka Dharmasiri, the band secured Best Drum Major Award. Through dedication, discipline, and passion for music, the Bandaranayake College Western Cadet Band continues to stand as a symbol of pride, echoing the school’s spirit of achievement and inspiring generations of young musicians to follow in their footsteps.
