St. Joseph’s Family of Schools

Founded as St. Joseph’s Private School (SJPS) Concert Band in 2017, the band has gone on to make their mark nationally and internationally. SJPS Concert Band performed for the first time within 6 months of its history in June 2017. They went on to performed in their first ever original school musical, “The White Rajah of Sarawak” in August 2017.

In 2018, the SJPS Concert Band was invited to perform with the St. Teresa’s School Concert Band at their 25th Anniversary Concert. Later in the year, the band travelled to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah to participate in a band exchange with 10 other schools from Sabah and Sarawak.

SJPS Concert Band participated in their first competition in the Kuching Concert Band Festival 2019 and received a Silver Award. Later in 2019, the band once again performed in the original musical “The White Rajah of Sarawak”.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, SJPS Concert Band participated in multiple virtual/online competitions. The band received Gold Awards and first place placements in the Concert Band, Mixed Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and Solo categories at the Malaysia International Virtual Band Championships (MIVBC) 2020-2022, an event sanctioned by the World Association of Marching Show Bands (WAMSB).

The band made their first public performance post Covid-19 pandemic in August 2022 in the school’s “Rhythm & Colour” variety concert. And the band is now officially known as St. Joseph’s Family of Schools Concert Band, which comprises of students from the Private National Primary School, Private National Secondary School and International School.


In their first international event, SJFS Concert Band was invited to performed in the 3rd North Eastern Winds Festival (newFEST) 2022 in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. The band also combined with the world renowned Suranaree Girls Wind Symphony to perform in a concert at the festival which took place in October 2022.

"The SJFS Concert Band was formed to give our students an opportunity to develop interest in the performing arts. Through teamwork, character building and discipline, the students experience the pride of working hard and seeing themselves improve. with half its members under thirteen years old, the SJFS Concert Band aims to be a concert band of high quality and standards beyond the ordinary showcasing the talents of our students under the direction of Mr. Wilson JL Tan. "
